Our youth take positive action that makes a difference in their schools and their communities.
Alternatives in Action’s Community Programs (formerly known as HOME Project) offer youth and their families a broad range of after school programming and school-linked services that prepare young people for success in college, career, and community leadership. Our comprehensive community school initiatives are based out of four East Bay high school sites: Fremont High School, Life Academy of Health & Bioscience, and Alternatives in Action High School in East Oakland, and McClymonds High School in West Oakland.
Through our Community Programs, we partner with school staff, youth, parents, and organizations to create powerful, real-world learning opportunities for over 1,300 high school youth in our “Six Pillars of Collaborative Programming.” These include After-School Community Projects, Academic Support & College Preparation, Career Development, Parent Engagement, Health & Wellness, and Cascading Leadership. We offer a place and supports that meet the needs of the whole child, from leadership to tutoring to physical check-ups. As youth progress and grow, they may take on roles of greater influence in the school and co-lead programs with other youth.
From 1996 – 2014, Alternatives in Action partnered with schools in Alameda to provide after school community programs and services and those efforts were concentrated at our West Alameda campus. In 2007, we became the Lead Agency of collaborative programming at Life Academy in Oakland, where we facilitated the development and implementation of a cohesive strategy for academic intervention, enrichment, and parental involvement. In large part because of our accomplishments at Life Academy, the Oakland Unified School District invited us to take on the role of Lead Agency of the McClymonds After School Collaborative in Oakland, which we did in January of 2009. In 2012 we were invited to expand our role at Life Academy, to include leadership of their new middle school programs, as well as assume the role of Lead Agency at Fremont High School. Just prior to the start of the 2014 – 2015 school year, we relocated our charter Alternatives in Action High School from Alameda to the Seminary neighborhood in East Oakland. Today we are deeply committed to each of our four schools, inspired by the unique strengths and accomplishments of each, and excited to develop new opportunities for youth and adult leaders from each site to learn from one another.
