McClymonds Youth & Family Center
Community Programs at McClymonds High School:
Founded in 1915, McClymonds High School is the third oldest high school in Oakland and the only high school operated by the Oakland Unified School District in West Oakland. McClymonds currently serves approximately 265 students – 90% African-American, 4% Latino, and 3% Asian Pacific Islander; 54% are male and 46% female. 62% are eligible for free and reduced lunch and 5% are English Language Learners. Site strengths include strong collaborative partnerships with a history of investment in the school community and an infrastructure that supports collaboration, including an advisory body and an active alumni association.
Alternatives in Action’s Community Programs are housed in the McClymonds Youth & Family Center, which opened in February of 2011 on the school’s campus. The center features a dance studio, computer lab, and a community performance space with a roll-up door to encourage neighborhood curiosity.

Best Buy Teen Tech Center:
Alternatives in Action celebrates its 20th Anniversary with the grand opening of a Teen Tech Center sponsored by Best Buy. The Best Buy Teen Tech Center increases access to technology, media, and the arts for Bay Area youth, and supports youth in leveraging technology to develop projects that represent their educational and career interests. The Best Buy Teen Tech Center is a safe, interactive space for teens to explore the latest technology and multimedia tools with support from peers and adult mentors.
Thanks to a partnership between Alternatives in Action and Oakland Unified School District, The Best Buy Teen Tech Center will be located at Alternatives in Action’s McClymonds Youth & Family Center at McClymonds High School. The Best Buy Teen Tech Center supports Alternatives in Action’s multimedia programs, where Oakland youth have a safe space for exploring career opportunities in technology and multimedia.
