Life Academy of Health & Bioscience

Community Programs at Life Academy of Health & Bioscience:

Life Academy opened its doors as the first small public high school in Oakland in the Fall of 2001, seeking to dramatically interrupt patterns of injustice and inequity for Oakland’s under-served communities. In 2014 they completed a middle school expansion to include the full complement of grades 6-8. Through transformative learning experiences focused on Health & Bioscience, students are engaged deeply in learning and inspired to acquire the skills they need to succeed in college and their chosen careers. Of Life’s 270 youth, approximately 61% are Latino, 23% are African American, 7% are Asian/API, and 2% are White. 85% are eligible for free and reduced lunch and 29% are English Language Learners. This site’s strengths include a strong parent participation program and a track record of success engaging youth in meaningful internships. Life Academy also has the highest UC and CSU acceptance rate of any high school in Oakland, with students going to schools like Stanford, UC Berkeley, University of San Francisco, UCLA, UC Davis, Smith College, and San Francisco State University.

Alternatives in Action’s Community Programs are housed at the Life Academy Youth & Family Center on the second floor of the school in a space renovated by teens and their families. The youth center serves as a learning space and also offers recreational activities, information boards, and room for completing homework.
