Alternatives in Action is a youth-serving non-profit that operates the Bay Area School of Enterprise (BASE).
BASE, the first youth-initiated public charter school in the country, opened in 2001 to serve youth primarily
from Alameda and Oakland. The program at BASE focuses on college preparation, community engagement,
and youth leadership.
Position Title: Assistant Director/Humanities Coach (English & Social Science Teacher/Project
Coach/Academic Advising)
Position Aim:
The Assistant Director/Humanities Coach will teach academic courses,
which integrate English-Language Arts and Social Science content with community projects and a
youth development approach. The coach will also serve as an academic advisor for approximately
twenty students and have administrative/program development responsibilities as a school leader.
Hours: Full Time
Compensation: Competitive, depending on Qualifications
Objectives:

Take a leadership role in a program development area for BASE such as curriculum development
and/or college readiness program development.

Collaborate with BASE staff to create an innovative; project based learning experience that integrates
English and Social Sciences with a real community development project (enterprise).

Work with BASE staff to ensure that projects and community work are academically rigorous and fulfill
specified course requirements.

To develop supportive, positive relationships with learners.

To work with learners to develop individual learning plans that will guide their education and to ensure
that they are making progress towards these goals in specific subject areas.

To work with learners to ensure they are making progress towards meeting the graduation requirements.
-
To assess student work and performance towards academic and personal development goals.
-
To participate in staff meetings and trainings as part of the BASE staff team.
Qualifications:

California Teaching Credential in English or Social Science.

Minimum of 2 years experience teaching, preferably in alternative, youth development,
and/or experiential learning settings.

Experience and/or strong interest in community development.

Ability to work in a youth friendly, collaborative, student centered environment.

Ability to use authority, set boundaries, and hold high standards with youth.
-
Experience working with diverse groups, learners, and communities.
-
Ability to work in a “start up” atmosphere and a rapidly changing environment.

Bachelor of Arts degree

Related advanced degrees preferred, but not required.

Position Aim:
The Math Coach will teach Algebra, Geometry and
Algebra 2. The coach will integrate youth development practices and
experiential learning opportunities to provide a more holistic learning
experience.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Arts degree
- Intern credential or clear teaching credential in Math for the State
of California
- Minimum of 2 years experience teaching, preferably in alternative,
youth development, and/or experiential learning settings
- Ability to work in a youth-friendly, collaborative, student centered
environment
- Ability to use authority, set boundaries, and hold high standards with
youth
- Experience working with diverse groups and communities
- Ability to proactively work in a rapidly changing environment
- Related advanced degrees preferred, but not required

Position Title: Administrative Coordinator
Alternatives in Action seeks an outgoing, energetic, highly organized,
experienced administrative professional to support its three core
programs based in Alameda – the Bay Area School of Enterprise (BASE): a
public charter high school, Home Sweet Home Preschool and the HOME
Project: an after-school and summer leadership program.
Responsibilities:
Managing school attendance system, parent communication and support,
filing, ordering and tracking supplies, postage meter maintenance, heavy
phone communication, HR and risk management support, correspondence
support, data entry and general office duties.
Qualifications
:
- Strong organizational skills
- Computer experience including database management (Powerschool and SalesForce)
- Experience and the ability to work in a fast-paced, multi-faceted environment essential (in an
educational (and/or nonprofit) setting preferred)
- Highly detail-oriented
- Demonstrated customer skills with a diversity of people
- Bilingual (Spanish-English) required including written communication in
Spanish.
Schedule (non-negotiable):
7:30 A.M. – 3:30 P.M.
Compensation:
$30-34,000 DOE; medical benefits available after the first month.
